For the person with a young family

  • Osprey Backpack - We tried many baby backpacks and just loved the Osprey for it’s comfort and pocket design.  It’s great for overnight trips and day hikes.

  • Peapod - We use this for sleeping in the tent so our toddler has his own sleeping space and some containment.  It can also be used for naps under trees during a lunch break.  It’s light and quick to set up.

Here we are enjoying our Osprey baby backpack.

For the coffee lover

  • Aeropress - If someone wants a step up from instant coffee, the aeropress is a great option.  We use it at home too!

For the backcountry enthusiast

  • inReach and subscription - This is a gift for the person receiving but also their loved ones!  I would say it’s an essential piece of gear for ANY backcountry travel.  This way, with satellite communication, a person can call for help or text with family.

  • Gravity filter -  For years I used drops to clean my water and then once I started using a gravity filter, I couldn’t go back.  It’s quick and the water tastes so good.  We’ve used it all over the world, including murky desert water and been so happy with the results.

For the kayaker or canoer

  • Watershed bag - I received this from Ben for my birthday one year and it was the best gift.  These bags are amazing and easy to use.  It’s something I wouldn’t have bought for myself because it’s not essential but it’s a really great upgrade.

For the person new to an area

  • Backroads mapbook - These books are so great for finding campsites and also following dirt roads to see where they go.  Keep one in your car but be sure to bring it inside every now and then to dream and plan of new places to go.

Nothing like starting the day with some Aeropress coffee and chocolate.

For the lightweight hiker

  • Long handled Titanium spoon - Again, this is one of those things that isn’t essential but so great.  The long handle allows it to be used for cooking and stirring as well as boil-in-a-bag meals.

For the daily urban walker

  • Ice traction for Shoes - This was a popular item of gear when I asked people their favourite gear of 2021. Remember, going outside doesn’t need to always be epic. These types of crampons for regular boots and shoes can make the difference for someone to get outside and breath fresh air every day.

And a couple more because I can’t resist…
